heading into a prime year...

2010 has been quite the year...

a year of love, learning, heartbreak, reflection, anger, growth, birth, and change...
unbelievable, remarkable change.

december was a little up-and-down on this end... but i have to tell you, what might've been a blue year-ending has completely flipped... right now, i feel like i'm living in the middle of a gorgeous fireworks show.  the old is falling down around me while the new and unknown is revving up bigger and brighter in the distance.

i cannot wait to kick of this new year on the farm with my entire family, brand new baby girl, and friends.  tomorrow, 1/1/11, will be the baby's naming which will be followed by yet another gigantic shindig on the farm...

so much to celebrate, so much to give thanks for.
SO SO SO much to look forward to!
this will be a prime year... i can feel it!
get ready, em, it's gonna be a great one!

farewell 2010.  2011's gonna be a doozy, can't wait!!!

love, laughter, and smizing...

baby-amazing-gorgeous-engle-friedman-norman-girl is part of a family that lives through love and laughter.  she is certainly an engle-friedman-norman as is evident by her squeaky little gurgly laugh, cuddliness, and natural "smizing" (please tell me you've watched at least 1 episode of America's Next Top Model).

here are some more pics of baby girl during her second day of life and the ceaselessly laughing, kissing, crying family she has been born into...

*a born riot... cracking grandpa up already!*

*A.N.T.M. watch out... i SMIZE in my sleep, yo*

*foxy little family*

*my daddy likes nipples. a lot.*

Today is December 28, 2010

and that means it is one of the best days of my life...

My one and only AMAZING, incomparable, fearless, warior-godess of a sister gave birth today (without a drop of medication or pain killers in her system!!) to a STUNNING, equally courageous 5lb 8oz baby girl.  We will not know the name of the baby (as is tradition in Jewish culture) until the formal baby-naming ceremony which will take place this Saturday at my parents' synagogue.  All are welcome to come, celebrate, laugh, drink, and eat... Em, I so wish you could be here!

My paradigm has shifted, my world has truly evolved.  It is a new day, a new lifetime, and what might have bogged me down or soiled my spirits yesterday is actually of a different era...

I can't quite describe it but I truly, wholly feel that this is a new world full of life, love, and adventures unknown!  Baby Girl Norman, I love you so and you've been here scarcely 13hrs!  Thank you for bringing your clarion pipes and your perfect head of thick black hair to this world.  You, too, have brought life's revival and an astonishing re-writing of my perspective's boundaries.  I cannot wait to hear more of what you have to say and see what becomes of you!  Tomorrow I'm going to set up your little nursery and tell everyone that I encounter (as I did already today) that I am a brand new auntie of a PERFECT baby girl!  Welcome to a long line of ball-busting, hard-headed, strong, giggly, loving, passionate, sensitive Engle, Friedman and Norman women.  I LOVE YOU and will now scurry to bed so as to see you that much sooner in the morning!

LOVELOVELOVEandLight to all on this remarkable day!  December 28, 2010

(em, will upload pics as soon as I have my computer back!!) xxa

let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

as you are well aware by now, we have had quite the snowstorm here in NYC. i decided to really bundle bundle bundle yesterday and take a nice long walk down to the williamsburg bridge.  here are some shots from inside the eye of the storm:

And here are some of the final results I woke up to this am (which generously endowed me with a day off of work):

Thoughts of the Day

1.
For the final truth about snowflakes is that they become more individual as they fall—that, buffeted by wind and time, they are translated, as if by magic, into ever more strange and complex patterns, until, at last, like us, they touch earth. Then, like us, they melt.

merry christmas (part1)

i love christmas. though it's not my holiday, who's to argue with merriment, family time, warmth, good food and songs?  i'm certainly not in a position to argue... so instead, i like to embrace the festive spirit and participate / happily observe in my own little outsider way.

i just saw the BEST video from gawker... i can't seem to figure out how to embed it but I recommend you watch it...  so enjoy "And Now, a Video Montage of People Getting Puppies for Christmas" (and the comments people have left below... too funny!!!

The blessed comforts of comfort food…

I was feeling a little off my game yesterday.

And by a little, I mean a LOTtle. So rather than going out with friends, coercing myself into a yoga class or pushing to run errands after work, I opted to stop. Just stop. Yes, after a long non-stop work day I chose to go home, put on comfy clothes, watch some movies (and the end of West Wing season 3… AMAZING!), and roast up some of the most comforting comfort foods I could think of.

While my mother is a fantastic cook, I have found that some of my go-to comfort foods have only been added to my diet recently, over the past few years. *(also, it’s hard to make krot-pretzel or mushed peas starting at 8pm after a long day). Though I didn’t grow up with these next two foods, I seem to crave both of them when I’m feeling blue or sick. They’re easy, fast, and have the uncanny ability to comfort and calm ya down, if you’re looking for a gastronomical hug.

Roasted Cauliflower & Roasted Chestnuts

ROASTED CAULIFLOWER

I learned this recipe from my best friend’s mother (one of the greatest women I’ve eeeever known). Now, regardless of season, I make it when I need a bit of a pick-me-up. I have adjusted the recipe (Ari version) due to matters of ingredient freshness but have included the classic, as well. Do a taste test, see what you prefer! You really can’t go wrong, they’re both delicious….

CLASSIC Cauliflower:

*Pre-heat your oven to 350
*Cut a head of cauliflower into small florets, wash and dry
*In a baking dish, spread out the cauliflower and cover with olive oil, salt & pepper to taste
*Coat the little caulis w/ 1/3 cup shakeable/freeze-dried parmesan and ¼ cup bread crumbs
*Pop these little guys in the oven for around 40/45min, giving them a little toss around every 15min or so.
*When they’re fork tender, they’re good to go! Enjoy

ARI Cauliflower:

*Pre-heat your oven to 325

*Cut a head of cauliflower into small florets, wash and dry
*In a baking dish, spread out the cauliflower and cover with olive oil, salt & pepper to taste
*Roast these caulis for around 25 minutes or so, then take them out and cover in garlic powder (about 3tbs for the whole head of cauliflower) and juice from about 1/3 – ½ meyer lemon (they’re sweeter and fruitier than regular lemons…SO GOOD!)
*Pop the caulis back in for around 15 minutes or until they they’re just a touch golden brown and fork-tender. Take ‘em out, and while they’re still hot cover with plenty of freshly-grated parmesan cheese and ENJOY!
… yumm… just had some for lunch and my spirits have been ever so lifted!

Chestnuts Roasting… in my oven!

**TIP: If you’re selecting your own chestnuts, try to get ones that are flat on both sides**
*Pre-heat your oven to 415

*Wash and pat your chestnuts dry

*With a sharp pearing knife cut an “X” into the flat / horizontal surface of the nut’s shell. I’ve found that the larger the “X,” the better.

*Spread your chestnuts onto a cookie sheet, pop in the over for around 15-20 min (until the shells pop open and the meat is tender but not dry!!)

Take ‘em out, let them cool just a bit, sit down to a movie, start shellin’; eat and enjoy!

Back to the future Part II

First and foremost... I LOVE BACK TO THE FUTURE and actually saw it on the big screen earlier this year with my friend Molly who happens to be a Back-to-the-future-o-phile...

AMAZING

Second of all, and much more importantly, yes, 2010 has been a very important year.  It has had grand high points, (in fact my whole year started on a very, very, VERY high point!!), and subsequently had its ups and downs, trials, tribulations, growing pains, and successes.  I look back on 2010 with great affection and gratitude while looking forward to all 2011 has in store for me and all i have in store for 2011!

Em, any resolutions for the new year?!

Wishing health and happiness, love, light, and laughter to all as the holidays continue on!

retracing my steps

i recently took a saturday to re-explore my neighborhood.  i left my cell phone home and allowed myself to flit around the area.  i used to spend nearly every weekend just *shmiring around aimlessly.  for some reason  i hadn't taken myself around williamsburg in many a month and just had the urge one day... so i bundled up and set out to some of my favorite haunts.  if you happen to be local (ie. em, when you come to visit), i suggest you plan to stop at these 3 spots (and sorry in advance for the dark photography. the mood lighting in all of these venues made adequate picture-snappin a bit tough...)

my favorite variety of chocolate in this shop is the Fleur de Sel but you really can't go wrong with any of their interesting flavor combinations.  i inquired about their hot chocolate and one of their chocolatiers told me it was "in the works."  if my chocoholic sister manages to come out this weekend i will definitely make a point of going back to investigate the results of their experiments.  i can't imagine a bad result and i promise to report back...

this is simply an exceptionally well-curated "art book," handmade-journal, letterpress, and stationary store.  their goods are stunning... i wish i could spend a day in this shop either flipping through their "art books" or writing in any of their notebooks.  and their "art books" well, they're something to behold.  you have to go check out these items in person to truly understand how exceptional they are...

MOON RIVER CHATTEL

a good friend and i used to pronounce the name of this magnificent mercantile with a french accent.  and then we were corrected.  it was embarrassing.  yes, once we learned that it was pronounced chattle rather than shhhaaa-telle we felt rather foolish.  however, to this day, when I think of this store and the refined selection of bath, kitchen, bedding, life, happiness wares sold here, i cannot bring myself to say its name without the french affect.  the goods, both antique and new, are too stunning.  to say the name of this store accurately would simply be too sad and everyday.  so here, dear friend, is moon river shhhhhhhaaaaa-ttttellle.  sorry the picture is so epically dark... it really is such a lovely hole in the wall!
